Chapter Nine

Reece

“Whoa.” The word left my lips the moment I stepped into the room because I felt like I’d just stepped into the library from Beauty and the Beast. There were shelves upon shelves of books that spanned the walls, reaching all the way to the ceiling. The wall on the opposite side of the room, though, was nothing but a huge glass window that lit up every corner of the library.

Wooden stairs led to a walkway halfway up the walls that ran across all three of them, making it easier to reach the books. Though I suspected Damien wouldn’t need to use them much, what with his ability to fly.

The room had a warm, cozy vibe to it, and I could imagine spending hours in the space, poring over all the gorgeous books I could see. I hadn’t been much of a reader before I met Arty, but he’d converted me with his love for thriller and horror books. I wondered if Damien had similar tastes in books or if he preferred something milder.

“Nice, isn’t it? Damien got this room rebuilt a few decades ago, and he can spend hours in here when time allows.”

Had Damien designed this room as well?

I walked over to one of the shelves, trailing my fingers over the spines. Surprisingly, they were all mythological texts. Old, worn leather books that looked decades, if not centuries, old.

“Oh, that’s Day’s humor shelf. He likes to chuckle over all the ways humans have misinterpreted him and his predecessors,” Ro’Shassz said, and his dry delivery made me chuckle.

I had a feeling the image we had of Satan or the devil in our books was somewhat based in truth. For all I knew, Damien could be the exception to the rule, and his predecessors could have been scheming devils. Who knew?

“Um, can I ask you a slightly personal question?” I asked, turning to Ro, where he was laid out in front of the windows. Did snakes sun themselves? This one sure did.

“Ask away. Damien said you have carte blanche—whatever that means—over anything you want to know.”

His comment gave me pause, but I shook off the strange flutter in my chest and focused on what I’d been about to ask.

“What exactly are you? Damien said you’re a part of his soul or something like that? I didn’t really understand.”

Ro turned his eyes on me and blinked once, long and slow. Then he rose up and curled around, sitting up in the way you see snakes sitting in drawings. “In the simplest of terms, Reece, I’m Day’s storage unit.”

My brows furrowed, and I was even more confused than before. “Storage unit?”

“Damien is the king of this world, and he has a lot of power that goes with it. Power that can destroy him if he stores it all inside himself. So he created me. I’m a part of his magic, not his soul, and in times of need, he can use me to supplement his own power. You get what I’m saying?”

I nodded.
